Part of the equation would have to involve what those mature poets do with what they steal -- De Palma does nothing but cheapen and vulgarize his borrowed materials.
De Palma definitely vulgarizes his material, but I've never felt that he's asking me to take it seriously. His films are more tongue in cheek. He's saying there's nothing wrong with a film being a grand spectacle in style.
Nor is there anything wrong with a film being a grand exercise in style. The problem is that DePalma's films are really really bad grand exercises in style.
