Yeah, and its not just his themes, its also his methods. Tarkovsky, Tarr, and Antonioni are directors that are revered among film circles, but even the few hipsters who enjoy an indie flick can't tolerate long sequences and a limited amount of shots. Those techniques are quite prevalent in contemporary Asian cinema with directors such as Tsai Ming Liang, Wong Kar Wai etc. But some mainstream films now have a different shot literally every 2-3 seconds.
