Interesting to compare with a film like 1974's "The Parallax View", insofar as today's political films dealing with disenchantment with the political system tacitly accept human corruption and manipulation, and see it as commonplace. Gosling's character type would more likely have been an assassin in the earlier film than a world-weary reporter, albeit one troubled by getting the blood on his immaculate attire.
