By stripping the film down to its barest components Refn bypassed a lot of the genre’s trappings and revealed the characters for what they truly are: little boys and girls with the most childish of aspirations. It is only fitting that they live and work in LA since they all seem to have adopted a role and taken their cues from the movies.
