As with most period films, there's a certain fetishization of the details; grime, wool, wood, sweat, etc. Hillcoat though finds his true dramatic capabilities when he obscures them in close-ups. Often he frames simply two faces filling up the screen or just one, illuminating tension and connection, and thus a human element to his pulp tale.
