The-turin-horse About
The Turin Horse

Easy to admire, easy to label a "masterpiece" - the signature long takes, the minimalist drone, the oppressive atmosphere and howling wind. Tarr's dirge-like mediation on death and endurance did not absorb or enlighten me. This too was an endurance test for me. While I admire Bela Tarr's total dedication to his vision and Kelemen's top-notch cinematography, this was otherwise a monotonous, totally empty experience.

It's supposed to be. And these aren't Tarr's signature long takes. This is a total reinvention of his formal approach.

I know it's the intent - I didn't have enough characters in my initial post to clarify. My point was that I didn't take anything away from the monotony/emptiness, as others seem to have. And I guess I'll take your word on the long-takes as I've only seen two of his films. But he is very much known stylistically for his use of long takes/very few cuts, is he not? Could you elaborate on how this is a total reinvention?
