About
Beyond the Hills
Mungiu delivers another perfect ending with a contemplative and poignant final image. Again he minimizes camera movement by shooting long takes of meals and conversations, painstakingly framing the psychological dance that takes place between the characters with every look, gesture and word. The multiple examples of situational irony in the script make for excellent social and political commentary, but the film as a whole transcends the social issues with its chilly filmic representation of the psychology of faith and spirituality that recalls Bergman and Dreyer.
