The Master

I love PTA, he's been in my top five for years. This film, however, I can't seem to appreciate. Joaquin Phoenix's performance just never quite did it for me -- it inescapably evoked his latest work prior to this film, the infamous faux-doc "I'm Still Here". The writing just wasn't there -- PSH and Amy Adams became forgettable. Stylistically/cinematically, this film pales in comparison to PTAs past work. An opinion.

    I'm a huge fan of PTA as well, so I really hope that I'll feel differently about this movie than you. But I really appreciate what you wrote. All these other hyperbolic reviews suggesting that it's the greatest film ever made worries me. I'm thinking that the truth lies somewhere in between your take on it and...(ahem) Annas take on it...

    That's quite a contrarian take. The film was unlike anything I'd ever seen, capturing something darker, more psychological & more human than any of his previous works. I was blown away not by PTA fan-boy syndrome, but by a hypnotic celluloid poem.
