A not inconsiderable misfire: a theatrical conceit encloses the drama like an ill-fitting corset reducing Tolstoy to a series of choppy vignettes almost played as farce. Indeed the production appears more like a wittering-twittering British middle class drama broken down into toy theatre bite-size chunks than anything about the social and political mores of Imperial Russia. An opportunity missed.
