The Master

I liked many things about the film (expressive faces; cinematography; score,etc), but at the same time it felt primitively hollow, and perhaps it's by design that I must go through that experience. It establishes early on Phoenix's character is a damaged, demented, senseless, directionless, and a destructive man; and his arc remains the same the whole movie. What you see on the surface is really it, nothing more.

    I felt that his character remaining the same was a big part of the story, showing that this new method/religion Phillip was touting was ultimately ineffective and pointless. That there was no true benefit other than the 'Master' reaping the rewards
