Holly-motors About
Holy Motors

Lived up to everything I wanted. Just as a precaution though, this film felt like it was intentionally ‘slight’ in tone, with ideas about cinema and the roles we play in real life too, but any deeper theories about the content are what you bring to the images and scenes and not within the film itself. There is a danger that, as a film that is mostly playful despite having some serious to it, is going to get devoured by people thinking its empty and ‘makes-no-sense’ because critic reviews have plastered onto it serious themes that clearly weren’t on Carax’s mind when making it. I had no idea what the film was actually about bar small snippets of themes and that’s probably the point, a reflection on cinema = dreaming in which, like trying to watching the vast amounts of cinematic culture this references in one go, or an actual dream one has, the segments are varying and completely at odds with other at face value but together make rational sense even when the content is irrational, all helped by a cast lead by the underated Denis Lavant who gets to do things some actors probably wished could happen in their generic potboilers.
