While it appears to be a desolate, gloomy and ultimately hopeless examination of humanity and it's desires, I imagine Tarkovsky was really trying to convey that there is an optimistic message of hope buried deep within everyone. My own interpretation is that he seems to suggest that it is an internal journey rather than external one and it is triggered by faith in a higher spiritual power within us all. Very poetic.
