I agree with you. Vengeance is Mine is a character study where the director's only hand you can see in the movie is his camera placement. Imamura has been considered an entomologist by some and it clearly comes through in the movie. I will say however i slightly disagree with your interpretation of his 'vengeance.' I see the title as another way of looking at Enokizu's unflinching psychotic behavior. Another way of pointing out to the audience, "what vengeance is he talking about?" It's more about how he THINKS he has been wronged, and so he takes it out on everyone and the world.
