Taxi Driver

While indeed Taxi Driver has undeniable power, having seen it 4 or 5 times now, I can't help but feel that there's something missing. Scorsese and DP Michael Chapman's camera is tough and gorgeous, both De Niro and Jodie Foster give dazzling performances, Paul Schrader's script is top notch, and Bernard Hermann's score may be the most haunting he ever wrote, but it just doesn't add to the sum of its parts.
