16mm. Anticipation of an immense filmmaker, a merry-go-round of footage in a dark-lightened or light-refractioned visons/images of being cheerful and reflected. Windows, carousel, children, movements. And shadows shadowing.
God when Brakhage is good, he is absolutely mind-blowing. The sleeping/dreaming sequences, child crawling in the grass, and the beginning of the carnival are absolutely ecstatic. With that being said there are moments in the montage where the juxtaposition, wanting transformation and play, just falls flat and almost feels like filler.
A more minor work - except oeuvre-defining - , it leads to a fantastic segment: the carnival ride; kids' faces flying,undefined,shapeless, over&over. Two more, my own appropriations: the multiple children in bed; the baby on the grass and the camera as a drone bee. Tarkovsky and Malick,respectively - a rhizomatic delirium,sure, but that shared,bountiful well that is the *authentic* experience of infancy and living...
