It has memorable, even quirky characters (such as Cristiano’s friend, Luizinho, who bums off on the job and hates arugula), and a strong, at times almost monumentally epic composition. More importantly, it has a distinct pulse, a mix of quicker vernacular with loftier phrasing, punctuated by a varied musical score—an enjambment of rock and Brazil’s popular tunes, traversing registers, high and low.

Araby, a film that spends much of its runtime expressing the busy inner life of an outwardly placid man, is dedicated to the principle that appearances can be deceiving, a truism borne out in surprising ways by the movie itself, a skin-shedding thing that defies easy taxonomy.

In this journey from individualism to a collectivity, and from subjectivity to a personal sensitivity shaped by class, Araby takes charge of the dominant, normative structure of storytelling, and puts a mirror in front of it, cleverly seducing the viewer to enter a world that they wouldn’t otherwise.

  • Maureen Gueunet's rating of the film Araby

"We don’t want to represent the poor, marginal people as if their lives were only determined by violence or social conditions. We believe that these people can create something and think about more than mere survival. Of course reality can be shitty. We live in a world that make things difficult for poor people, but I believe that as filmmakers, we can sometimes reinvent reality and discover other possibilities"

  • Thiago's rating of the film Araby

  • Bilouaustria's rating of the film Araby

Where social content meets the pleasure to tell a story. "Araby" tells the modest life of Cristiano who struggled all his life but our emotions come not from political issues but from very simple feelings : to meet a friend, to share an experience, to fall in love. It is also exciting to watch a bit of a renew of a young brasilian cinema. The last bit sublimes everything that happended before with its voice over.

  • Juan Soto's rating of the film Araby

The whole film is contained in the first shot: life is like a mountain with an uphill hard to climb and a joyful and rewarding downhill... but the second, lasts considerably less. The pain is about to start over—unless you stop pedaling.

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film Araby

3.5 - It's weird how exponentially and gradually it gets better by the minute, starting aimlessly with a by then uninterestig protagonist and slowly turning into a deep study into the loneliness of the working class. Goddamn.

  • OFF_FRAME's rating of the film Araby

While the slow introduction to the main story via the notebook feels irrelevant by the end it does set the pace and tone for a meditative, wandering examination of character that provides plenty of moments of subtle revelation. Gentle and unafraid filmmaking that shows a director genuinely curious about the world around them. 4 stars

  • josé neves's rating of the film Araby

Digital. Indie Lisboa # 4. Although it has a somewhat academic appearance in the way introduces the characters and delays the look in gloomy clichés, from the moment that enters the narration off, the odyssey structure, it finds a direct figuration of the Earth's disinherited ones, always just with its characters-people and their framing in a story without remission. The soundless ending is extraordinary.

  • Artyom Yakovlev's rating of the film Araby

Only Brazilians would make so atmospheric, so moving a film, every frame of which pierces through you. You can physically feel what the characters are going through, how their culture and their environment are reflected in them, how they are struggling and searching for themselves, and how terrible the feeling of eternal loneliness is. The atmosphere of the film would have been incomplete without its wonderful music.
