সমালোচকদের রিভিউ

The film is powered by the underlying idea that children are equipped with all the emotional intelligence and resilience they need—if not to fully understand, then to survive, or to even transcend, the most egregious violence.

With glancing but salient references to Huckleberry Finn, Hernández Cordón’s film feels closer in story, image, and theme to Beasts of the Southern Wild, minus all the water and the vivacity of camera and montage—a proposition likely to frustrate many audiences, but I was intrigued.

  • Kelly Gauger's rating of the film Buy Me a Gun

This film will break your heart but also touch you in many ways. Cursed by unfortunate living conditions, a father does everything he possibly can to protect his daughter in a place where women and little girls disappear. The love that this father has for his child is nothing short of incredibly touching. This film will also have you cheering for this little girl as she does exceptionally well at standing her own.

  • Ted Eames's rating of the film Buy Me a Gun

A fascinating mix of hard-edged reality and magical realism. Matilde Hernandez's performance brings an air of contemporary fairytale to the brutality and the nihilistic violence of the rule of the drug cartels. Survival is all that matters, and the symbolic triumph of the children only ushers in a future gang. It definitely makes me want to see more of Cordon's films.

  • daisy's rating of the film Buy Me a Gun

The setting feels appropriately ordinary, and some important themes are suggested; girlhood within the framework of boyhood (non-sexualized) and the tender relationship between a father and daughter, all against a very relevant and very harsh political backdrop. While some characters could use further development, the film comes to a moving conclusion and demands either a sequel or further discussion.

  • mpho3's rating of the film Buy Me a Gun

"The film is powered by the underlying idea that children are equipped with all the emotional intelligence and resilience they need—if not to fully understand, then to survive, or to even transcend, the most egregious violence. ...[But] in an ending that is hardly happy...Cordón... plant[s] a doubt about the limits of magical thinking." - Ela Bittencourt, Mubi Notebook

  • saitosouta's rating of the film Buy Me a Gun

3.5 Full of the intense premonition in which violence bursts immediately, "Cómprame un revólver" depicts the desolate and brutal world realistically despite fablish attempt (Reference to Huckleberry Finn!). Although it feels a bit unfocused for my taste, impressive are the magnificent landscapes of Mexico and director's attempt that the last hope for us is children who survive through perils with their strong will.

  • Wee Hunk's rating of the film Buy Me a Gun

Excellent performances. It's just that the level of stupidity is so far off the charts that it doesn't seem believable. Many of these people do not quality as human beings. Innocence trapped in a jungle of predatory animals.

  • Nicole's rating of the film Buy Me a Gun

A fresh huck finn tale, with a protective but drugged out mexican guy pearce, and a compelling performance from the young Matilde Hernandez . Astonishing in its warped dystopian setting, where you can send YouTube links because the internet is still alive but there's no women, here's an entry to the post-apocalyspe genre that I'm glad exists. Mexican filmmaking has found strength with this impressive director.

  • Not A Sexy Vampire's rating of the film Buy Me a Gun

Holds a certain appeal for the first half hour or so. Watching a young child come face to face with horrific violence awakened a parental instinct in me that I wasn't aware of, such is the delicacy of the lead's performance. Film falters when it comes to the adults (last 30 mins are unmotivated), but the child actors are heartbreaking and soulful. The Statute of the Mothers hints at unbearable loss. Should be more.
