A time machine back to Oscar night '86, but Oscars invite too much cynicism. For all that's preordained about its drama and social advocacy, the former is lively and the latter is lived-in, thanks to an articulate mix of specifics and universals: fairy tale realism about a marginalized group that's also about a character that's also about men/women, with Matlin as a heroine who wants to be understood but not reduced.
I just this movie is far too overrated. IMHO it's quite predictable (yes, I mean, boring) and the acting a bit over-the-top. If you just see the begin of this film and the end, you don't feel like you've lost anything in the middle.
