  1. Kevin Matthews's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

A delightful short that uses an apparently true event to create a delightfully amusing comment on the divide between poetry, honesty, commerce, and advertising. Well worth 27 minutes of your time.

  2. edsalkeld's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

Excellent little short. And possibly the best exorcism you've ever seen.

  3. Ted Eames's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

Fun shaggy dog story from Eugene Green. There must be some good out-takes somewhere because it's amazing how the actors manage to keep straight faces, especially during the wonderful exorcism scene. And in the Portuguese original, the coke slogan is a genuinely lovely couplet.

  4. Charlie Douglas-Hamilton's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

Absolutely involving throughout its short runtime. The characters are well defined, and Green creates a stilted surrealism that elevates the story. Slightly reminiscent of a sunnier and more playful Roy Andersson. I really enjoyed it and will look out for more of his work, as well as another reminder to check out Pessoa's writing!

  5. Iulian's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

  6. Joshua's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

A witty homage to the Great (capital-G) poet of Portugal, whose relentless sincerity took as many masks as he himself took identities. Dry and self-assertive, the antithesis of sugary commercialism. A great (little-g) short.

  7. jsbrocka's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

Although the premise of this film is based on the simple anecdote of Fernando Pessoa once being asked to write an ad slogan for Coca-Cola, the storytelling is a complex triumph of modern filmmaking. Witty dialogue, charming characters, gorgeous scenes, and the director's imprimatur all combine to create 27 minutes of pure delight.

  8. Alex Meire's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

A light amusement between a couple of fados.

  9. Francisco Real's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

  10. rafaelluppi's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

Ainda assim, recomendo.

  11. Elijah T.'s rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

HFPSP; or, Dawn of the Encoberto Knowing nothing of Portugal, I didn't get the jokes, but they seemed to be ever present in a deadpan way. Overall, this is a funny and interesting "mini-film" (directly?) based on a true story. I imagine people who are from or live in Portugal would appreciate it far more than this foreigner could, especially if they know the Coca-Louca story or atleast know of Fernando Pessoa.

  12. Lucas da Rocha Costa's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

  13. jakun koo's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

  14. adugobiri's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

  15. msmichel's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

This droll, blackly comic short film from Eugene Green is a quite wonderful effort mixing the worlds of advertising, poetry and authoritarian rule. Like Green's features there is a tranquil beauty to his images but instead of his usual academic efforts this offers a glimpse of his humour alongside his intellect.

  16. Gabriel Vasto Laurindo De Masi's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

  17. Dan Kenneth Gigernes's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

How Coca Cola was banned in Portugal for 40 years. It is almost a shame it got allowed as that would have been a even bigger sensation. Great fun though especially the exorcism scene.

  18. Paul Mirek's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

A super-rewarding short that manages to be both dense and breezy at the same time. Carlotto Cotta's facial acting is a delight.

  19. tubbssw's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

A delightful premise with a great musical score to help things on the way.

  20. Jason's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

Hey there, Pessoa, my man, it true you saved Portugal? Mr. Pessoa, writing under one of the great many "heteronyms" he invented: "The truth is that nothing changes anything and what we say or do only brushes the tops of mountains in whose valleys all things sleep." Eugène Green, though a fun fella, is as voluntary an exile as exiles get; he don't traffic in no crass American commercialism. Fun rueful parables? Sure.

  21. ramonticart's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

  22. Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

It's charming and an absolutely hilarious and damning critique of both the dangers of capitalism and censorship!

  23. Francisca's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal

  24. Arthur Augusto Albuquerque de Barros's rating of the film How Fernando Pessoa Saved Portugal
