Jiří Menzel has made a career out of adapting the work of legendary Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal, and I Served the King of England is a crowning achievement. Undimmed by age, he won the Critics Prize at Berlinale for this cheeky, pitch-black charmer, full of bittersweet humor and sharp observations.
