"Johnny Mnemonic" was perhaps rightfully panned upon its initial release - I wouldn't call it a particularly successful film - but it's going to be awful hard for me not to at least appreciate a movie penned by cyberpunk icon William Gibson that also happens to star Keanu Reeves, Dolph Lundgren, Takeshi Kitano, AND Udo Kier while boasting the dream-like atmosphere of a lost FMV game for the Sega CD.
A weird and ambitious film that doesn't cohere at all due to cuts made by its distributor. Still, the film is made by fine artists like Robert Longo and William Gibson and more people should recognize how original and inventive many of its ideas are even if it is a mutilated and butchered film. For example, i have never seen a film with a hacker dolphin. Only a mad genius could think of that
Nifty ideas, completely inept execution. But I can't entirely loathe a movie in which Ice-T, Henry Rollins, and a psychic dolphin are revealed to be part of the same underground anti-corporatist network.
A good cyberpunk idea courtesy of writer/screenwriter William Gibson about the brain serving as a temporary memory drive for information, but it can not be appealing to have a memory drive in your brain that only remembers 80 gigabyte - that is less than 5 really good high-def movies making the science laughable and flawed here. Dolph Lundgren is the funniest in the film as an over-the-top villainous Street Preacher.
