Oksana’s performance is great, cold but intense (plus, she’s a piece of beauty even with bruises in her face). But I think this movie needs a better soundtrack (I recommend farewell/goodbye by M83), and please please please take those wings too!
While I agree with some viewers that this film is painfully manipulative and overly depressing, for some reason it always stuck with me. Perhaps Lilya's downfall is meant to challenge us and accept how self-indulgent happy endings really are, but also to focus on the reality of these scenarios and realize the possible political message behind it. Dardennes' films also helped me accept its potential and artistry.
A horrendously depressing portrayal of human trafficking that would be exploitative if it were not so true to reality. Throw out thoughts about cinematography, mise-en-scene, sound design and aesthetics, this film bears a daring and important idelogical message, foregrounding a deviant social problem that must be resolved, and that trumps all other aspects of cinema.
Pretty much agree, I'm never watching this again either absolutely depressing and with no real point to it and for some totally bizarre reason he opens and closes with Ramstein along with other shit music. Incredibly well acted though
The depressive version of 'Show Me Love'. The complete converse emotionally. Instead of moments of sadness among an ultimately upbeat story, there are moments of happiness among a definitely downtrodden film. A good film, but be warned it's a downer. I enjoyed the dream sequences with angel wings...
Powerful. A realistic tale of the worst in the humankind. It has a classical straight narration, you know the story and ending, but it still makes you cry and shiver. This movie should be seen in every high school around the globe and it should be seen by every man! Fuck, I hate this world and the comfortable bubble I'm in.
