In whatever genre Herzog chooses to shoot, his films seem to conflate fact & fiction. In his fictive Fitzcarraldo, for instance, a cargo ship is pulled up the slope of a mountain with sheer ropes, ratchets & humanly sinews. Conversely, Herzog's documentaries are unapologetically staged, contrary to the tenets of actuality. Here, subjects are fed made-up lines. Herzog carnivalizes them into caricatures of themselves
2.5 stars. Wener Herzog's 'Dumbland'. Oddly reminiscent of the sketch style of 'The Armando Iannucci Shows'. A little like Donald Barthelme too. Charming and shows a different path Herzog's filmmaking could have taken.
Kurt Schwitters crossed with Monty Python. It's almost sound poetry, in virtue of the line repetitions by the Bavarian loon. To think that Werner did shorts like this – and that he got goalkeeper Radenkovic and Mario Adorf to participate!
