Less about Lightnin’ Hopkins, more about the blues themselves, as I suppose the title may imply. It’s a mood piece as much as it is a documentary. Maybe it’s better to just call it a document, if that doesn’t sound too formal.
Like many of Blank's other films, this comes across as a slice of life rather than any sort of grand statement. And that's just fine. Getting to hang around with Lightnin' Hopkins while he drinks, plays and talks about music is a special treat. It is loose around the edges but has a clear focus, just like a good blues song.
