The Limey পরিচালনা করেছেন Steven Soderbergh
[It’s] a brain-teaser, at times flirting with midnight movie stoner pretension, that somehow keeps both its storyline and its emotions clear, and that also happens to fulfill the requirements of the revenge thriller, as well as the more rarefied genre of melodrama in which old men look back on life and take responsibility for their failures.

The first shot is as striking as any Steven Soderbergh ever forged. A hundred no less snazzy follow it… In times of mindless postmodernism, Soderbergh distinguishes between the reductive appropriation of an era (stunt casting, or a Che Guevara shirt, say) and the tenderly analytical embodying of it… This is assuredly Soderbergh’s masterpiece — the ache of missed chances and bad choices, the loneliness of vengeance, the search for true emotion in an ocean of ruthless fragmentation.

Its stroke-of-genius pairing of two ‘60s icons aside, “The Limey” is essentially a down-to-earth crime thriller that’s cut like an art film. The story is told out of sequence, but there’s an inherent logic to it. Conversations are re-created and reconstituted; they often resemble memories of conversations rather than real ones. The effect is riveting as well as surprisingly realistic.

  • Joshua's rating of the film The Limey

Strikingly underrated for its editing finesse, this film suffers from its macho associations, but its strength lies in delicately and gradually unpicking them until all that remains is an empty bellow outside a warehouse.

  • Jérémy Poirier's rating of the film The Limey

A tightly well made moody crime drama/thriller centered on a man (played savagely by Terrence Stamp) seeking vengeance after the presumed accidental death of his daughter. This tale is told in an incredible and different way than most films of the genre. Steven Soderbergh is such a unique and versatile filmmaker and this film should be praised way more. Still, I get why it doesn't work for some viewers.

  • Addy K.'s rating of the film The Limey

Soderbergh's trademark efficiency in this late 90s gem is all too evident when characters are reduced to their basic essence (Peter Fonda's villain is "evil" because he's devoid of good; Terence Stamp's ex-con from England has only one plan: find the villain, make him suffer, smoke cigarettes). When screenwriter Lem Dobbs pursued Robert Aldrich to direct, he ignored Dobbs. Soderbergh, instead, ennobles his script.

  • Tigrão's rating of the film The Limey

One of the 'smaller' Soderbergh movies, it's nonetheless fascinating in its storyline and editing. Terrence Stamp kicks ass, and I absolutely loved the idea of using clips of "Poor Cow" to create this sort of "meta" back-story to this character.

  • superbad71's rating of the film The Limey

Ultra stylish direction, cinematography and editing in a gorgeous-to-watch revenge film. A fine neo-noir the story line follows an unflinching Terence Stamp as he gets revenge for the death of his daughter. With the comedic "Out Of Sight" and this, more serious affair, Soderbergh has clearly demonstrated a talent for noir, I wish he would do more.

  • Quentin's rating of the film The Limey

One of the film that turned me into a cinema addict. I became a fan of both Seven Soderbergh and Terence Stamp afterwards. The story is simple and entirely supported by Terence Stamp's play. But the cinematography and editing blends classical and modern ideas in a way that still remains unique and makes the story captivating. The same year, Jim Jarmusch tried a similar blend and just as great with Ghost Dog.

  • El Biffo's rating of the film The Limey

Revenge Movie with a bunch of guys shooting at each other. I wouldn't have watched this if it hadn't been presented on Mubi. I suppose Soderbergh is considered an Auteur, of sorts. Nice editing. I usually don't even review these kinds of pictures but I guess this is an Action/Arthouse crossover. I liked the Easy Rider homage with Peter Fonda and Magic Carpet Ride. So long Peter, you were a piece of Hippie History.

  • Wee Hunk's rating of the film The Limey

This was back before Soderbergh traded style for fluidity. Good performances, though it's tough to tell whether Stamp's dialogue wasn't a bit hackneyed. As if he were overplaying it a bit because nobody could tell the difference.
