Soderbergh's first experiment with fractured timelines; deconstructing different strands of the plot and attempting to put them back together again, 'crisscrossing', like the title of the original film. It's not quite there yet, but it's fascinating to see all the elements at work, as well as the often outstanding use of colour and composition. S.S. refined many of the same techniques in Out of Sight and The Limey.
Not Soderbergh's strongest. It's structure of the movie really makes you pay attention to what's going and there some quite beautiful shots but outside of that, the performances are weak and there are major flaws to the story towards the end.
Wow, a real underappreciated gem, with a killer final five minutes. Artier and more pretentious version of Out of Sight with the tinting of Traffic and the runaround heists of Logan Lucky and Ocean's 11. "The idea that you think you make sense is really terrifying." "Being absent is really powerful." Funny that Soderbergh hates it so much, I think his disinterest in the material is what works for me.
