A kind of baroque classical nightmare, it’s too sturdy, busy and sure of itself to be much of a horror film. Nor does it mean to be. It wears the gown of horror, sings the tune, but its ambition is only to show off the horror imagery in service of a search for something else. A sort of beginning. It makes no bigger a meal of its reversals and clues than is required. Verbinski knows the mystery of the images is what draws the curious into the theatre, not any promise of a finished Rubix cube.

Justin Haythe’s script draws narrative inspiration from Thomas Mann’s 1924 novel, The Magic Mountain, as well as visual and thematic ideas carried over from Verbinski’s other films, from the aquatic imagery of the Pirates series and The Ring, to his underlying (and maybe even unhealthy) obsession with Chinatown. Polanski’s classic was paid affectionate, if incongruous, homage in Verbinski’s animated Western Rango, but its influence manifests here in a much darker and more diabolical way.

It’s difficult to separate the inert, interminable 146-minute end product… from the PR, specifically the “visionary” label affixed to Verbinski. Make no mistake, there are “visions” here, but they’re of the hollowest sort—pretty pictures, some interesting in broad-stroke conception, that are nonetheless leeched of those intangible qualities that would lend them genuine grandeur and thematic heft.

  • MATTEO BITTANTI's rating of the film A Cure for Wellness

It's many different films at the same time: Hostel for the 1%, Early Cronenberg, Late Lovecraft, The Grimm Bros on adderall... Mind you, none of these films are individually great. Cumulatively, the full package does not work either. There are some great moments but the (studio imposed?) finale is a major letdown. At any rate, I would take A Cure for Wellness over The Shape of Water any given day. And night.

  • Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film A Cure for Wellness

With a script that feels like a patchwork of several different ideas sewn together, Verbinski's film is not exactly the most cohesive of works, but it succeeds, in part due to the filmmaker's extraordinary visual sense, the tremendous atmosphere of its evocative location & the ethereal fairy-tale quality that becomes more powerful as the story progresses. It's a film where the ideas & iconography are most compelling.

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film A Cure for Wellness

One of the most ambitious and arresting horror films to come from a major studio in years, shrewdly synthesizing Lovecraftian intrigue, invasive 80's body-horror, corporate critiques and sumptuous Gothic art direction. It doesn't always succeed, but it's certainly something special (and scary).

  • ig_____or's rating of the film A Cure for Wellness

The film is fairly good, up until the last half hour... when it really goes into B-movie territory with a messy conclusion that wasn't necessary at all. It should've ended with that scene where a resigned/sedated Lockhart says to Hannah that he's finally cured. However, extra points for an inspired cinematography, inventive story and constantly keeping the viewer intrigued.

  • Rafael Zen's rating of the film A Cure for Wellness

Beautiful? Sure... but way too long and turning to embarassing 3D effects at the climax. I always think it's too basic to end a film by putting fire to a building - and sadly enough this is another of these cases. The kind of paranoid thriller that asked for a more intriguing case resolution. A good promise not accomplished by blockbuster 101 - like everything Verbinski touches.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film A Cure for Wellness

Gore Verbinski's welcome return to horror is both a stealth adaptation of "BioShock" and a critique of millennials' capitalist ambition. While the film owes a great deal to Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," "The Wicker Man," and early David Fincher mind-benders like "The Game," it's also somehow unlike any other movie I've seen. Dense, challenging, and perhaps overly long - auteurist horror fans should see it.

  • msmichel's rating of the film A Cure for Wellness

Hard to believe this was a studio funded film; one wonders just what the pitch was. The film tells a dark tale which brings to mind so many different sources but fails to find its own voice despite its overlong running time. Having said that its still a pretty mesmerizing watch before its ridiculous finish. Handsomely crafted with lovely macabre set design and art direction.

  • Palmat's rating of the film A Cure for Wellness

Probably the strangest studio movie you´ll see this year. It´s inspiriring to see a reknowned director run amok unfettered by studio interference and deliver such a singular movie. The visuals are "Kubrickian" and the casting and acting is on point. The story is good but it is all about Verbinski´s delivery which transports us into a conspiracy thriller with baroque and gothic overtones where anything can happen.
