I watched this, the original, and the 2010 remake at the same time. They kept a lot of the same stuff in both movies, but this one is more psychological, and the other is more horrifying. Same basic premise, but this one is more cat and mouse. Unfortunately that aspect goes on a bit too long. The main female character is fit, but not strong.
What a load of badly directed old tosh this is. Tedious in the extreme, repetitive, unimaginative and as exciting as a used tampon. Sandor Eles and Michele Dotrice totally wasted in an English film trying hard to be a Giallo.
There is another film from 1970 featuring a serial killer in the sunny French countryside. Chabrol's LE BOUCHER. As good as it is, Fuest's direction is more gripping and suspenseful. This is a textbook display of misdirection. Every character we meet arouses our suspicion. Fuest followed this with a second serial killer film, about one Dr. Phibes. The contrast between the two approaches could not be more stark.
