Central Airport THF Instrueret af Karim Aïnouz
It is an observational piece that reads like a two-part tribute: a testament to the singular beauty of a long-destitute place, and to the people who’ve unwillingly come to call it home.

The focus of Zentralflughafen THF is only inwardly political and remains strictly visual on the outside (the director is a visual artist, whatever that means). Through sharp, analytical observation the director captures the schizophrenic violence of European democracy with beautifully framed images that never feel gratuitous.

The film’s use of wide-screen space and attention to the power of architecture—cavernous, majestic hangars, often framed in extreme long-shots—counterpoint its humane focus on the migrants’ day-to-day experience. It creates an immersive sense of a place that is—like every airport—no place.

  • Michael Rozek's rating of the film Central Airport THF

Those orchestrating and profiting by the conflicts producing the refugees in this film should be forced to watch it until they burst into tears and sobs and swear eternal repentance. An unflinchingly disciplined, microscopically acute reveal of humans--representing all refugees from all conflicts--in a condition of brutal displacement, and so a film (NIGHT AND FOG is another) which never ends.

  • Kevin's rating of the film Central Airport THF

Over and over again, the issue of choice v necessity repeats in European films. This doc is probably continuing now and years into the future, until the airport becomes a vacation spot for third world tourists who enjoy kite flying. Maybe this review echoes the horror of today’s world shown in this film. Sticks to the soul and really saddens, the idea of protected v. refugee, when everyone comes from a war zone.

  • Pedja's rating of the film Central Airport THF

Very good comparison of two worlds, separated with a tiny fence and tones of administrative papers.

  • Loz Loory's rating of the film Central Airport THF

This film is good, but unresolved; it lacks enough footage to tell the humanitarian story, and also to tell the story of a building's changing uses. It could easily fulfill the historical mission with footage from the Berlin Airlift, etc. The story of the refugee crisis needs more commentary from other refugees, particularly women. The film has room for these additions, as the pacing is on the slow side.

  • Jonathan's rating of the film Central Airport THF

Excellent subject, wonderful camera work. The individuals followed weren't developed enough didn't talk about their thoughts or ideas : the security guards didn't speak when driving about, the clinician didn't reveal what was going through his head, the wonderful person carefully shepherding her people through procedures didn't get to speak, not enough curiosity from the huge team involved. Nevertheless much enjoyed.

  • conny's rating of the film Central Airport THF

ominous red credits and Wagnerian opening i felt the stamp of jack boots. its pace slackens (too much) to a seemingly eternal limbo for transient residents. external shots are beautiful, Bruegelesque in winter. for one young man the wait and homelessness may soon be over, his memories dreams of olive trees and peace. for others it may prove unlivable and despairing caught between bureaucracy and war. fascinating.

  • lesminho's rating of the film Central Airport THF

5/10 Struggles to convince but fails. I expected depth and some historical relevance. It delivered nothing. I relate to the 84 foxes who only come out at night when the old runways are left to make peace with their history.

  • ejonline's rating of the film Central Airport THF

I read criticism suggesting we did not get enough of everybody's actual thoughts (the refugees, the workers, etc.), but I don't share it. Given the trauma that people are fleeing, I don't think they are required to bare their souls beyond what they already do. The airport is safe but is a type of limbo, and the film captures that by following their daily routines and providing information about the process.
