Between Jordan’s festering, spring-loaded performance, Stallone’s reacquired affinity for minor-key character work, and Coogler’s seamless refashioning of an Italian-American mythology into an African-American one, Creed not only earns its Hollywood hokum, it makes it mean something.

[Stallone] has never before been this engagingly take-me-as-I-am, which reciprocally informs Jordan’s performance and Coogler’s sprightly, evocative, intensely atmospheric direction with their own illuminative confidence. The difference between Creed and most pop films is that it isn’t hollowly preaching of self-actualization. Instead, it physicalizes self-actualization, in all its terrifying, fragile glory

  • Ethan's rating of the film Creed

Michael B. Jordan really shows his range in this very engaging and inspiring film that adds a little more maturity and realism to the universe of Rocky Balboa. Stallone gives a very mature and seasoned performance that is a good compliment to a character that he has embodied for forty years. Also Tessa Thompson is a revelation in this.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Creed

If pressed, I would have expressed doubt that a sequel not written or directed by Sylvester Stallone would be able to capture that same blend of earnestness and heart on display in "Rocky Balboa" - at its best, this series is something like Frank Capra with boxing gloves - but I'll be damned if my eyes were dry by the time the credits rolled on "Creed." Ryan Coogler delivered one of the strongest films of 2015.

  • Dave's rating of the film Creed

An achievement by everyone involved. A great adaptation by Coogler which reinvigorates the franchise by playing its greatest overarching asset - the quirkiness, sensitivity and likeability of the legendary character and Stallone's ability to just BE Rocky Balboa. Kudos to all involved.

  • josé neves's rating of the film Creed

Formally, a step far ahead of his previous film (most notably the one sequence shot scenes), but in terms of dramaturgy and dramatic construction, a valiant triviality. I would add, however, that i much respect the diegetic biographic capacity that Stallone shows.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Creed

A movie that defied my expectations! When the final bout arrives I´m on the edge of my seat punching the air with a tear in my eye which is a rare thing. Stallone oozes gravitas in every scene and Jordan holds his own against Sly and their chemistry is palpable. I wish Coogler had played the "father-son-angle" a bit more and built the characters a bit better. Despite this, the film was very good! Check it out!

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Creed

No one had any right to expect anything from a Rocky movie made in 2015, but this one hits it out of the park. I was lukewarm on Coogler's last film, Fruitvale Station—its tendency towards melodramatic techniques didn't fit an important topic of social realism. But here, a bit of classical melodrama and on-the-nose music cues are exactly what the doctor ordered. Undeniably rousing. Love the one-take boxing match.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Creed

Coogler breathes new life into the 'Rocky' franchise with this clichéd but endearing tale that brings the story full circle. Jordan is well cast in the title role but Stallone surprises with this tender hearted portrayal. Well shot by Alberti with some real novelty shown in the boxing scenes. When 'the music' kicks in during the final bout I dare you not to be stirred. Another chapter could be welcomed yet.

  • Joe Hackman's rating of the film Creed

Creed surprised me. I had preconceived notions about the movie based on the dailies I saw, but the committed performances and impeccable shot design pulled this movie together to become something bigger, something beautiful. SPOILER: The symbolically loaded final scene with Rocky struggling up the steps he used to endlessly run in training montages is one of the more memorable pieces of cinema this year. 9/10
