Dumbo Instrueret af Tim Burton
Serious matters of the economy or of mental and physical autonomy do not disappear when reflected through the prism of a child’s perspective. Beneath the carnival trappings and the ruckus of moving trains and screaming crowds, Dumbo himself proves the damage that occurs when children’s rights are violated for the sake of generating capital; there is little evident need for additional decoration.

Whereas humans barely feature in the 1941 version, this one is full of them, and short on things for them to do. The old Dumbo was shunned by his fellow elephants – here was a piercing indictment of how we mistreat our own misfits. In the remake, there are no elephants to mock him, and the film doubles down instead on a message that was always implicit in the story: exploiting animals is bad.

Burton’s version isn’t only one of the most conventional works of his career, it’s also a much safer, blander film than the original.

  • Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film Dumbo

The circus as microcosm: both of America & the cinema itself? Themes of prejudice, persecution & overcoming personal circumstances are carried over from the earlier film, but collide with Burton's subversive take, which casts his own studio as the villain. At a time when so many of these Disney remakes are artistically bland & effectively about nothing, Dumbo is visually extraordinary & bursting with themes& subtext.

  • J. O.'s rating of the film Dumbo

Completely, wholly unnecessary remake that seems to ignore everything that made the 1941 original magical. Now to be fair, it wasn't a bad viewing experience and the spectacle was worth the Tuesday discount tickets, but it just didn't have the spirit and wonder of the original. Two hours to explain exploiting animals (and others) is bad? Points for an adorable Dumbo and lavish visual sequences.

  • oldfilmsflicker's rating of the film Dumbo

I liked it. The early scenes with Dumbo’s mom properly fucked me up, Colin Farrell saying “Big D” in whatever accent he was doing is my new religion, and they should give Alan Arkin an Oscar for his delivery of “Wow that’s a disaster.”

  • Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film Dumbo

Guys, this movie is weeeeeird. I didn’t expect the utterly bizarre journey I was about to embark on. Dumbo makes no sense whatsoever, and needed at least 10 more passes, but I have to say— I couldn’t quite take my eyes off the screen with fear of missing something out. I was completely transfixed by the delightful trainwreck unfolding before their eyes. Let’s get ready to Duuuuuuuuuuuumboooo!!!

  • Steve Pulaski's rating of the film Dumbo

We can talk about how Tim Burton essentially helped pioneer this recent surge of live-action reimaginings of Disney's most treasured properties. And we can talk about how the anti-corporate subtext of this film is a real howler given it comes from an empire trying to own the multiplex. Just about any conversation would be more compelling to have than addressing "Dumbo," an aggressively bland and disappointing affair.

  • Mr.Rager's rating of the film Dumbo

It wasn't by far the movie i wanted it to be but still i enjoyed this one for the feeling of being back in a movie theatre after a long break and of course for meeting for the first time the cute special baby elephant. From the very beginning the movie was continuously rushed; the characters a bit hollow. M.Keaton an uninspired choice but Danny DeVito was truly great here. Farrell and Eva Green underused. 7.75/10.

  • Erica Narduzzi's rating of the film Dumbo

Sprecati Colin Farrell e, sopratutto, Eva Green.
