2019 | Kandidat: Young British/Irish Performer of the Year

By primarily defining Glass in formal, thematic, and ethical opposition to the adaptations he believes have been widely mistaken for the pinnacle of comic book form, Shyamalan here is unable to loosely interpret and interpolate the genre as he did in Unbreakable.

Despite its longueurs, Glass offers something we never see in contemporary tentpole comic-book movies: a stylized, color-coded, largely visual world, a reality of angles and camera moves.

What’s most notable about the film’s aesthetic is its texturelessness, the sense that the physical action is stilled and smoothed in a clear-blue gel of uniformity and indifference; it suggests a filmmaker on the outside looking in, and looking toward the next sequel.

  • chanandre's rating of the film Glass

[UCI] (Broken Promises for Broken Hearts) Broken men breaking " No Righteous Gods Allowed Here". Alas breaking down like an engine that birthed a mountain of steam - up in smoke they go along their delusions, fears & noble intents, leaving mourning carers in their wake (literally). Shyamalan is truly the new Spielberg (storytelling-wise). He's also a perfect mix between Hitch's prowess, Clint's pathos+Mann's ethos. ∇

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Glass

Give M. Night this—he has ideas, and he joins Brad Bird in looking for meaningful metaphors for our superhero zeitgeist. But one problem is showmanship: Glass is dotted with comic bits and suspense teases that don't land. Another is that where Spielberg demonstrates, Shyamalan can only insist. It's strange to see his trilogy fall prey to the bloat and maximalism of finales—only here, it's not Action but Statements.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Glass

A good and unexpected close to a trilogy where comic book tropes have been subverted to great effect. I love that this is a dialogue driven piece rather than an action fest BUT... The emotional aspects lacks urgency and the characters never really hit their stride. The film should have been longer to really support the characters arcs. But as Mr Glass says, "this an origin story" so that might have been deliberate.

  • Kamran's rating of the film Glass

A complex ensemble of characters, stories, and social reflections are brought to tier in a structure found on matters of the unknown in human conscience. Deeper than mere science fiction, though somewhat deflected by 'superhero' motifs, Glass particularly excels when focusing on the humanization of its variant characters. 80/100 - Great.

  • ig_____or's rating of the film Glass

"Unbreakable" and "Split" are OK, but not among my favourite Shyamalan films. "Glass" could've been a powerful final chapter in this unexpected trilogy and even-though there were some interesting revelations, overall it felt very flimsy. A lot of build-up towards an anti-climatic final showdown. I was hoping Paulson's character to be a 'superhero' too. Someone get her in a room with Marvel and DC executives, please!

  • Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film Glass

A perfect end; bringing to a close the various themes that run throughout both the trilogy & Shyamalan's career as a whole. It's another film about overcoming grief; about secret societies & people bound together by experience; about extraordinary people & ordinary people that rise to extraordinary levels when the situation calls for it; about forgiveness as an act of faith. The deconstruction of genre is incredible.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Glass

Surprisingly enjoyable conclusion to a trilogy we never knew we wanted. Both a sequel to the director's 'Unbreakable' and 'Split' this well constructed picture thoroughly satisfies as conclusion to both. Willis, McAvoy, Jackson and Paulson all offer solid turns and Shyamalan wisely gives us all the original supporting players as well save one.

  • Steve Pulaski's rating of the film Glass

There's something broadly entertaining and mystifying about the way M. Night Shyamalan takes three of his most treasured characters and moves them around like chess pieces in one large, entertaining spectacle of deception. That is "Glass" put pithily. Its captivating climax and affirming conclusion, however, come at the expense of a talky first act and a bit of narrative discombobulation. But McAvoy is brilliant.
