High Life

Instrueret af Claire Denis
Frankrig, Tyskland, 2018

The story revolves around a group of skilled criminals who trade in facing jail time and capital punishment for agreeing to participate in a likely fatal government space mission where they will be tasked with finding alternate energy sources, and will be part of human reproduction experiments.

High Life Instrueret af Claire Denis
Ultimately, and largely thanks to the complexity of the performance that Binoche constructs, Denis manages to make a poignant plea for the expansiveness in our most elemental relationships, an urgent call for—yes, that word—love.

Uncompromising and enigmatic, High Life relinquishes nothing of the philosophical and visual force, the difficulty and seductiveness, that have made Denis’s films among the most compelling of contemporary cinema.

This is an alternately disturbing, intellectually stimulating, scary, erotic, and revolting collection of moments that you’re supposed to watch, listen and react to, not necessarily process as one might a traditional linear narrative, or some kind of cinematic equation that can be unlocked like the final level of a videogame.

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film High Life

Motherhood sure seems to fuck you up. What is even sex? High Life has a lot of distracting idiocrasies (that some will say are qualities, some will say are the lack of them) and it never seems to reach its full potential (it doesn't really care to), but all artifice aside, Denis never loses sight of where she is going and the film, through thick an thin, keeps luring us back into its cold, gooey and weird embrace.

  • josé neves's rating of the film High Life

Cinema. For some reason that escapes me, this filmmaker is considered with much esteem at the level of the "authors" private club. I know from her three estimable films and some very expendable ones, and an awful previous one from Barthes, that put Binoche into supposedly erotic rags, as here, in a set of absolutely derisive characters. The film doesn't conquer the existential cosmogony it craves so much for.

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film High Life

"I can't get laid 'cause everyone is dead," Sonic Youth once sang. They joked, but High Life takes the mixture of sex and future-shock seriously for one of the most unsettling, provocative movies of 2019: a microcosm where a dark vision of sex—violence, infertility, compulsive masturbation, self-loathing, maternal hangups, disgust towards one own's body—yields the clarity of a pure new life. Disturbing and ecstatic.

  • OFF_FRAME's rating of the film High Life

I found the dialog and voice-over to be excruciatingly exposition-heavy and there were times when I wanted the plot to keep moving but there is something about this crazy world that keeps sending slips of little images back to me weeks afterwards. At times mesmerising, revolting, intriguing and tense, there's a solid nod to Solaris and its a welcome miracle a film like this gets made in this climate. 3.5 stars

  • Jason's rating of the film High Life

What I think distinguishes Denis' form is its combination of rigour and fluidity. Agnès Godard, her regular DP and ultimate collaborator, was not available for HIGH LIFE, but Yorick Le Saux has stepped in w/ gumption. I associate w/ co-scenarist Jean-Pol Fargeau an oceanic quality, shades of Virginia Woolf -- transversal connections and movements, heave and free-float. Perhaps the cosmos itself is a kind of ocean.

  • Jérémy Poirier's rating of the film High Life

Claire Denis' latest cinematic effort is as fascinating and disturbing as it gets. A really dark and raw sci-fi film about morality. Plus, her unique directing sensibility is particularly striking and really moving in the father/baby scenes. Here, Pattinson delivers another astonishing performance and the cinematography and art direction are gorgeous. It has its narrative imperfections but still an amazing film.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film High Life

Rape, terror, and death at the edge of a blackhole. I may be betraying my unfamiliarity with director Claire Denis' body of work, but I can quite easily connect "Trouble Every Day's" interpretation of a 21st century Nosferatu in Vincent Gallo to Juliette Binoche's insemination-obsessed Dr. Frankenstein in "High Life." The difference here is that "High Life" ends with some semblance of hope - or maybe just oblivion.

  • Ethan's rating of the film High Life

Claire Denis delivers another visually stunning and thought provoking film that needs multiple viewings to truly appreciate the greatness of this film. Pattinson delivers another intricate and intense performance and the look of the film feels like Solaris meets Alien. More proof that Denis is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
