Petri’s peculiar—and peculiarly brilliant—film is a lesson in dual forms. In the first scene, when the nameless protagonist enters Augusta’s home, the tone is difficult to pin down. Sharp string stabs on the one hand, jarringly comic sound effects on the other. And when the man kills his mistress: silence.

Given life in the magnetic performance of Volonté… the lawman embraces his corrupt and venal tactics with a fundamentalist’s zeal, most memorably in a rant worthy of Mussolini against “the exercise of freedom” as he addresses his new underlings… [But] the film, in its caustic damning of official vice over the intimate variety, sometimes uses a sledgehammer where a scalpel is needed; Volonté’s antihero even says that police and criminals aren’t that different, a lazily explicit redundancy.

Investigation remains so powerful because what could seem to some a rather fanciful portrait of civil repression and corruption was, in fact, not far off from the actual situation of the bloody years of political dissent that were the Italian 1970s. The film appears psychotic and caricatural in large part because the Italian state was so itself, as it sought neither to pacify dissent nor mask its power.
