The visual ellipsis created far greater menace and terror, as the shark is nowhere and everywhere. The cutting (Verna Fields was the terrific editor) and Spielberg’s use of reverse zoom create a jittery atmosphere, underscored (in both senses) by John Williams’s thrumming bass, eerily vibrating through the waters, its four-note motif the pulsating heart of the film.

The camera moves in while the lens simultaneously zooms out, which creates an unsettling effect of vertigo. Brody, perched in his beach chair, appears to stay in the same spot in the frame, while it appears that the environment around him is shifting. In Jaws, this is a purely psychologically based effect, meant to represent the altered state of the character on screen.

The shark in Jaws is the shark of our collective worst nightmares, almost otherworldly in its enormity and texture. It’s also a great big phallic joke, the agent of the blowhard Quint’s destruction. The shark can mean anything you want it to mean, or nothing, and that uncertainty epitomizes this movie’s lasting appeal. Jaws is the pop masterpiece as happy accident; a parody of America’s can-do spirit that’s also, by the end, a celebration of it.

  • chanandre's rating of the film Jaws

[Kino: DCP] (CinePop IV) Markl na fila da frente. Waited 13 years to see this film on a proper movie theater: it was Oh so worth the wait. Cinéphilia: that's the discipline. (review in progress...)

  • Kenji's rating of the film Jaws

I enjoyed this at the cinema aged 14 and then went swimming in the scary Welsh sea. Sharks are not monsters and deserve respect, not demonisation and persecution

  • Wee Hunk's rating of the film Jaws

Not a big fan of the Spielberg. Didn't watch this movie for at least 30 years. Heard that too many people were traumatized by it. Someone I knew had trouble driving home because he thought the sharks were going to get him. When I did finally see it, it didn't have the same impact. It was a well made film as most of his are, and the performances were great, but by the time I saw it I was sick of Hollywood movies.

  • Bilouaustria's rating of the film Jaws

CINEMA, restored, 2K Digital _ Rewatch on big (giant) screen and it might well be the best Spielberg of all. Young Steven is not yet saturating everything with over the top emotions and the last 30 minutes are just mind blowing. The music of John Williams and the flair of some rest of the New Hollywood will do the rest. Tourneur used to inspire the same fear with an almost invisible animal : very cinematic.

  • Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film Jaws

The timeless theme of 'man versus nature' taps into something incredibly primal. Like Moby Dick, the film's generic adventure story becomes a framework for more elemental interpretations specific to the notions of fear, obsession, masculinity, etc. Spielberg's direction owes much to the influence of Hitchcock, but it's the 'Fordian' elements of the script& the well-developed characters that create lasting substance.

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Jaws

Seen in ideal circumstances: Saturday night of 4th of July weekend, with a packed crowd that laughed at each joke, screamed at the floating head, and applauded Shaw's entrance. It still plays like a pivotal link between Old Hollywood and the modern blockbuster, proving how far an imaginative eye can elevate B material. But for the first time, I noticed how cleverly—and classically—it sketches its community.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Jaws

Essential cinema. Still Speilberg's best film that hasn't lost any of its power over the last 35 years (!). Though it is the film that started summer blockbusters and therefore villified by some one cannot really fault the storytelling or performances here Robert Shaw is just aces here with top notch performances by Scheider and Dreyfuss. Shaw's telling of the Indianapolis sinking still sends shivers up the spine.

  • Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film Jaws

I just re-watched this film for the first time in a couple years. I used to think that it was this great masterpiece, but now all I see is mediocrity. There was no character development, most of the music feels forced and out of place aside from the notorious theme, and the scares were merely jump scares that came exactly when expected. The experience was boring! I think in general, I have outgrown Spielberg...
