Jia Zhang-ke, a Guy from Fenyang Instrueret af Walter Salles
That Jia’s life story is itself an at once profound and clipped-from-the-headlines-familiar story of a self-contained individual borne through almost unimaginable geographical, economic, political, familial and historical change in the space of a generation cannot come as much of a surprise. But the connections between life and art are filled in, naturally and vitally, in Jia Zhangke, A Guy from Fenyang.

Salles’ film ultimately comes off not as a serious documentary but rather as the kind of promotional piece used for DVD extras. As such, it will have more appeal for people who know Jia’s work and history and want more of an insight into his personality than for newcomers, who will remain largely in the dark about the reasons for his renown and the cinematic context from which he emerged.

The problem with art like Jia’s is that a straightforward approach isn’t going to reveal anything that isn’t already there in the work or document anything that the movies don’t already document themselves. And why settle for second-hand when you can just go and watch the real thing?
