The Case of the Morituri DivisionsInstrueret afF.J. Ossang
Convincing references to GODARD & BAADER-MEINHOF. But French PEUKON is an ersatz compared to the UK or US PUNK. Feels posture & lacks authenticity.
I saw the movie. Officially I get credit. Images went in, and then out of my eyes. I watched 20-40 minutes each night right before I went to sleep. Nothing registered in the brain. I remember people running and fighting. Then some people talked nonsense at great length. I plan to watch all of them.
Dressing-up box dystopia. Derivative comparisons abound. Position it where you wish and you’ll find something it’s drawn from: for me bits of Mad Max, Forbidden Zone and Jubilee; bows to Godard, possibly a nod to Gilliam with plenty of punky, pop video aesthetics in between. It’s borrowings are both its charm and stumbling block in that we’ve been here before albeit more coherently than this amiably nutty assembly.
3 1/2 * "images, we are all images, in a coma film!" (That was my favorite quote)....so this was a muddled blur, but an awesome muddled blur, as if taking a sightseeing tour with Godard and Burroughs and Gramsci through a crumbling, pagan, violence-drecked Vegas....
Visually it is stunning; the soundtrack is terrific, the idea sounds interesting enough. The intellect took over and ran into the wilderness of references. This film could potentially mean a lot, but it is impossible to follow it or care, to watch it is a struggle and when it ends, I am relieved. Maybe that's the point. Je suis PERDU
I think Doris Wishman’s films are way more punk than this, with much more bite and critique and DIY invention. I find this is strangely similar to Blondes in the Jungle but feel it misses the marks that Blondes nails.
The film has many references: Godard, Jarman ... but without having the narrative solidity of any of these. The first 20-30 minutes run away, after it is hard to stay interested. A very long post-punk videoclip, which bores too soon.
This film definitely caters towards a punk/alternative audience, it held my attention for a little over 30 minutes until I realized my interests don't lie within the narrative. There were great sequences that take advantage of the lighting, colorization, and editing of the film, but they were few and far inbetween the long sequences of nonconformism. Not a great film to segway into punk cinema, maybe my mistake. Eh.
