Lords of Chaos Instrueret af Jonas Åkerlund
It’s whenever things get real—nastily, depressingly real—that the film is most out of its depth. . . . What makes the film watchable is the acting, which at times has a real comic edge, plus a touch of poignancy.

Akerlund, a veteran music-video director who intersperses “Lords of Chaos” with mildly surrealistic bursts, never establishes a coherent or interesting point of view. The tone unproductively veers from the goofy to the creepy, which creates a sense that he was still figuring it out in the editing.

No one who truly appreciates the bleak ferocity of black metal is apt to find much to like about director Jonas Åkerlund’s Lords of Chaos, a skin-deep depiction of the early-’90s Oslo death metal scene that gets off on the salaciousness of the church burnings and murders that brought bands like Darkthrone and Burzum to international attention while treating the music itself dismissively, even with contempt.

  • J. O.'s rating of the film Lords of Chaos

Setting aside that I am an avid listener of black metal - especially the early days - this was a particularly painful experience. The potpourri of actors with American accents and heritage is miserable, and poor Cohen delivers a laughable performance as a cackling, insecure Varg. The frantic music video aesthetic feels dated, and the attempt to work horror into what feels like an after school special is irritating.

  • Jason's rating of the film Lords of Chaos

If it seems to you like irony is a too-easy way to "redeem" your utterly trashy movie, well I say unto you: God bless irony and hail Satan too. LORDS OF CHAOS isn't a million miles away from I, TONYA, and if it's more puerile than TONYA that is exclusively on account of its total trash aesthetics. I wasn't too surprised they speak American in Norway because Davey Fincher already taught me 'bought (sic) them Swedes.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Lords of Chaos

Judging the historical accuracy of this film is a fools´ errand but regardless I found it quite intriguing. The performances are pretty tight and the production design is solid. The narrative is however too busy getting to Varg and the childish rivalry with Aarseth, barely letting Dead-era Mayhem get any room, which is a damn shame. I think this movie should have been longer and dealt with in a less fantastical way.

  • Salem Kapsaski's rating of the film Lords of Chaos

I've been looking forward to this film for a long time and I'm glad to say it was everything I wanted it to be! Don't listen to the disgruntled Varg fanboys. This is a great black comedy with a well structured script and some extremely violent scenes. The church burning scenes were actually strangely beautiful... Also Sky Ferreira is in it... what more could you ask for?

  • Daniel Iván's rating of the film Lords of Chaos

An almost interesting film of one of the most silly touchstones in music history. The questionable actions of a bunch of over sensitive teenagers are romanticized in the middle of a constant chop chop in a crossover between gore films and master chef. The use of jump scares is kinda contradictory with the general pace of the film. Needless to say the majority of the real people involved acuse character murder. Sad.

  • Giles J Davis's rating of the film Lords of Chaos

Donnie Darkthrone fans get Satyriconned by Åkerland wishing he was trying to reimagine Kids Of Degrassi Street in the style of Gus Van Sant. Sexed up, sensationalised trash of events that barely had much impact outside of Norway let alone the music scene 25 years ago. For fans of Mandy & toe-dippers alike. Even that Mark Chapman film looks like Parajanov compared to this utter drivel. Avoid at all costs. Unratable.

  • R's rating of the film Lords of Chaos

plays like a set of unrelated music videos lacking any character development/plot. so much of the film is fabricated for reasons that are unclear (maybe åkerlund just wanted to see sky ferreira topless), too many awful voiceovers...seems like a comedy but the delivery is just so awful. could have been a great movie about forbidden homosexual love in a homogenous community but we got this crap instead

  • dave gunn's rating of the film Lords of Chaos

A campy, satirical (or perhaps totally accurate) portrayal of a buncha rich kids trying to rebel in the most superficial, misguided ways possible, culminating in a corny competition amongst posers that leads to several legitimately horrible things happening. This film juxtaposes the juvenile attitude shared by the kids in it with the slow, disturbing actions that came of their immaturity. This exceeded expectations.
