Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Tim Burton Storbritannien, 2016
The film has its pleasures – but it’s too long, and narrative momentum was never Burton’s strength even in his heyday. Inertia infects every aspect here: the Children are stuck, Jake is stuck, Tim Burton is stuck. In the end, his own special power turns out to be a mixed blessing: the ability to hit the sweet-spot where Gothic fantasy resonates with a mass audience – but only that particular sweet-spot, again and again until his power is exhausted. Miss Peregrine is tired, and finally tiresome.

Burton is of course the intuitive choice to bring to the screen a monster fantasy about the persecution of young outsiders. Miss Peregrine is an ingeniously designed, very good-looking macabre entertainment, but the achy wistfulness that made Riggs’ novel so poignant is all but vacuumed out of the movie. Burton is more interested in picturing peculiarity than in exploring its emotional fallout or any implications for how we understand the Third Reich and pass its memory on to future generations.

Adapted to the screen by Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class), the movie is engaging at every turn, and there are some winsome performances (from Green especially). Burton has covered similar ground already, but fans will relish this spooky return to form.

Green cuts a marvelous figure here as the raven-haired, shape-shifting Miss Peregrine, who smokes a pipe and wields a crossbow with the same deadly sangfroid. The feeling that courses between her and her young charges, much like the affection that binds Jake and Abraham, is understated yet impossible to miss. Sympathy for the misfit is one of Burton’s perennial themes, but it has been a while since he tapped into it with such a genuine and bittersweet sense of solace.

The story gets awfully busy — you may get lost in 1943 or perhaps closer to the present — but it scarcely matters. Mr. Burton’s attention to detail and to the ebb and flow of tone (scary, funny, eerie), as well as his sensitive, gentle work particularly with the child actors, make each new turn another occasion for unfettered imagination.

What’s happened to Burton’s gift for storytelling? In the movie’s second half, it’s impossible to follow the story’s gnarled-vine logic. The picture’s elegance devolves into chaos, a mess of noisy, cluttered action sequences, as if Burton didn’t trust us to sit still through something quieter, moodier and more controlled. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children could have been a return to form for Burton, but he loses his sense of direction halfway through.

What’s missing from these big-budget plastic fairy tales [Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Big Eyes] is a sense of joy and discovery. Thankfully, Burton has momentarily rediscovered such genuine feeling with Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, a spirited adaptation of Ransom Riggs’ 2011 novel. For the first time in ages, he seems to be having fun with his material.

Debatable whether the images add up to much outside of each pleasurable moment. But there’s still a fullness of imagination and artistry here that’s become increasingly rare in Burton’s work. It’s nice to see him, even if only temporarily, back on point.

[What’s] impressive is the daring, force, and tact with which Jane Goldman’s screenplay presents Jacob’s saga as a metaphor for the Holocaust, evoking its horrors in everything from Jacob taking Miss Peregrine’s peculiars to the orphanage’s attic and away from an advancing hollowgast, to Baaron’s moral “hollowness” and his grotesque appetite for destruction… Pity, then, that the filmmakers hold the peculiars at arm’s length.
