Nowhere near the disaster that I had been led to believe. Serviceable and amusing star vehicle for Depp and Paltrow with able support from McGregor and Bettany. The film is about as deep as a 'Rat Pack' adventure but it is dumb fun here and there.
A serviceable caper; the kind of film one might be tempted to call "amusing", but never actually funny. The filmmakers aim for a modern-day spin on the style of 60s era Blake Edwards, but end up with something closer to Austin Powers (albeit with Depp's Terry-Thomas imitation replacing the more successful characters of Mike Myers). The art conspiracy plot is genuinely interesting, but mostly treated as a McGuffin.
Not the train wreck everyone believes it is but I can see why it is an easy movie to dislike. I actually found myself confounded by the fact that I did not hate it. Still this is a missed opportunity on more levels than I care to mention. So I'm giving it a light two out of five. So if you adjust your expectations ( IE blow them till kingdome come) then you'll be alright.
Appallingly uninteresting but insultingly unfunny; it's like they crafted every potentially humorous scene they could think of and robbed it of anything resembling humor. Proves once again if you make a film centering around a silly, uninteresting dolt of a character who can't take himself or anyone seriously that you, yourself, won't be able to take the project seriously. Early candidate for worst film of 2015.
I am not sure why all of the reviews for this film are so low. I thought the humor, particularly the physical comedy of Johnny Depp and his manservant, Jock, was particularly pointed and had me laughing out loud several times. I also enjoyed the multilayered storyline and the mystery of the "true" painting. Just add this to the list of Johnny's characters done superbly well; he is a hoot to watch, and is a fun film.
Definitely not a waste of time but you should have low-expectation. Funny in many moments but silly all the way. Depp is far far away from greatness and everyone else seems to be in the same way. Only Paul Bettany does a fine job.
The director does his job truly awuf. Unfortunately, David Koepp really sucks here.
I'm not mad cuz i saw this movie and this is very important.
