There is a poetry to these films, and they provide a sense of sustenance and succor in increasingly uncertain times.

Like Captain Fantastic from a couple of years ago, but with much more art, grace, and a sense of actual danger — perhaps because it is set among the homeless, perhaps because it was made by a woman — Leave No Trace restates the male Gen-X narrative of protecting children from the outside world and their eventual reintegration into it.

Debra Granik (Winter’s Bone, Down to the Bone) doesn’t make a new movie very often, but when she does, she makes it right. There’s not an unneeded glance, frame, or line of dialogue in this story.

  • Thomas's rating of the film Leave No Trace

If you take pleasure in the similarly nuanced, gentle meditative drams of Kelly Reichardt you will certainly enjoy this. A touching relationship exploring the tensions and dual dependence between father and daughter. The story is set in rural Portland Oregon, a locale also favoured by Reichardt.

  • NICOLE86's rating of the film Leave No Trace

Powerful performances from Thomasin McKenzie and Ben Foster make this film an interesting look at PTSD as well as living off the grid. Its usage of almost no dialogue rooted it in realness and the backdrop of Oregon and Washington was simply stunning.

  • Michael H. CLAES's rating of the film Leave No Trace

Are survival techniques useful to all? Can a child learn within and through the nature? A lot of open questions for a simple, basic, necessary movie === Les techniques de survie sont elles utiles à tous ? Un enfant peut-il aprendre seulement dans et pas la nature ? Pas mal de questions ouvertes pour un film simple - basique - nécessaire 4,5/5

  • OFF_FRAME's rating of the film Leave No Trace

Excellent performances drive what appears at first glance a simple coming-of- age tale of family, belonging and agency. It's the subtle complexities of a post-war backdrop, the riffing on mainstream conformity and the wonderful supporting characters that set this one apart and give it a beating heart. 4 stars

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Leave No Trace

I noticeable step down from Winter's Bone, though they share an appealing method: a view of the strong-and-silent corners of blue collar America, where what's unspoken roils under the surface awaiting potent expression. This one lacks the fullness it deserves; too many rocks are left unturned. But the understanding reached at the end—about veterans, about America's go-it-alone spirit—registers as a genuine ache.

  • Steve Pulaski's rating of the film Leave No Trace

When the credits for "Leave No Trace" rolled, I almost felt like I was still waiting for the movie to begin. For 104 minutes, Debra Granik is on the cusp of getting to the emotional center of a teen's abandonment and isolation, but never closes in for a satisfying finish. Caught somewhere between naturalism and dramatization, this film is caught in the middle — and good performances aside, there's *something* absent.

  • anarresti's rating of the film Leave No Trace

This would go great in a double session with Captain Fantastic. Both contrast idealism with growing up. How can changing teens reconcile with their father's idealistic pursuits? The adult here seems to escape from. And in Captain Fantastic the adult is trying to find ways to run to. This has little dialog and scenes are usually nicely filmed. We get a sense of intimacy and understanding. Great film.

  • Bilouaustria's rating of the film Leave No Trace

What Granik can´t offer visually because of her lack of visual rigor, she gives otherwise in many different ways. This moving work might remind you of Lumets "Running on empty". She reveals again a young talent with Thomasin Mc Kenzie but the biggest strength of the film is the way to approach this story : almost a drama without dramatization. Richer than its looks, it is all about finding the right distance.
