The special achievement of Not Reconciled is its capricious jamming together of three periods of German history. What in any other film might serve to clarify the action—descriptive titles, observable changes in costume and decor, expository voice-over narration—is here almost totally upended. Information comes without the customary gadgetry of narrative filmmaking; the attitude toward time is (always) wonderfully, strangely agnostic.

Only the subtlest of indicators alert viewers to the story’s complex flashbacks… Straub and Huillet bring the layers of history to life in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric evoke a moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.

For all its difficulty and complexity as an integral narrative, Not Reconciled registers more simply and conventionally than Straub’s other works within its individual sequences, and is perhaps his only film to which the usual concept of mise en scène can comfortably be applied.

  • josé neves's rating of the film Ikke forsonet

35mm, retrospective Straub-Huillet, rewatched. From a wonderful and complex original text of the great writer Heinrich Böll, that details the lives of a German family throughout several generations, Straub compose essentially a musicality in the enunciation of an accusation: the militarization of a country through the mediate imposition of a notion of empire. Marxist, in its compositional gesture. Absolutely modern.

  • Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film Ikke forsonet

I love how each of the stories are weaved together so carefully and are each deconstructed and evaluated in such a short running time- this also serves as another great example as to why Straub-Huillet deserve more respect and attention!

  • El Biffo's rating of the film Ikke forsonet

Why are people comparing Straub to Wes Anderson? I like this a bzillion times better, and can't even make the connection. It's like comparing Dostoevsky to the Hardy Boys. I did have to watch this over and over to get a grip on it, so I can understand why some people may prefer a Bugs Bunny style of film making over this early German New Wave; this requires some thinking, unlike Bugs Bunny Or W.A.., which do not.

  • Karthik's rating of the film Ikke forsonet

A perfect film in so many ways but perhaps most of all in the perfect integration it achieves between its style & its intent The overall editing rhythm of the film has to be experienced to be believed. (The caviling about "acting" in the film (below) is amazingly besides the point: converting a chief aesthetic merit as it does into a flaw!: indeed one of the first choices for Johanna's role was Brecht's widow.

  • Jason's rating of the film Ikke forsonet

We may note that in their second film--profoundly sophisticated, impossibly aesthetically rich--Straub and Huillet indicate that they have assimilated (modernist) advances in cinema introduced by the likes of Rossellini, Resnais, Bresson, and Godard, but one might convincingly argue that they push things further than any of their predecessors in terms of extending the question of what their medium is capable.

  • kartina obskura's rating of the film Ikke forsonet

it's maybe unfair to watch it without reading the book first but i believe that films should stand on their own, independently from their literary sources. i liked its form but the function of the form in relation to the (often incomprehensible) content was lost on me. i appreciate the intention though.

  • dionysus67's rating of the film Ikke forsonet

Spanning five decades of tumultuous German history Straub's film raises the iconic, metonymical, cinematographic and political trope of architecture to new heights precisely because he denies this intuitively obvious notion of (architectural/dramatic) exposition. His flattened universe where eras and characters commingle eliminates convenient classifications/institutions, rendering violence a 'reconciled' continuity.

  • Wee Hunk's rating of the film Ikke forsonet

You can ignore my rating. It's not the fault of the filmmakers, but whoever did the subtitles chose to do,. maybe half of them. When the plot moves around as this one does, one has the feeling that one is missing a lot, and that does not make one happy. It seemed like a very interesting movie, though.
