In her essayistic film Obscuro Barroco Greek director Evangelia Kranioti explores the poetic words of her transgender narrator Luana Muniz, who is herself an icon of Brazil’s queer subculture. Amidst a somnambulistic tide of images she enters the pulsating world of creatures of the night.

#HotDocs25 Points for consistency of vision. Dark, pulsing, voluptuous, hypnotic... Sensory immersion into the lush surreal streets of Rio at Carnival. Oversized overwhelming hedonism, wild but dreamlike, with the trip guided (by Luana) as though by a goddess showing you her realm. And on the ground is bright-eyed Pierrot - rapt adoring witness to the city/night. Some real poetry... Just, overall, a bit much.
