Nearly as verbose as THE TERRACE shot two years before but a lot more interesting as the main characters of the film are Casanova and Rétif de la Bretonne. Furthermore, Marcello Mastroianni drives his wagon as if it were a Ferrari. a DVD zone curious ones.
Unjustly underrated period film about the collective effervescence of the French Revolution. Like most productions with an international cast it risks coordination. Its abstention from dramatic excesses delivers an intensely dialogic film with carefully crafted shots and with a stellar cast that traverses the parodic, the human and the tragic with admirable command. Sheer excellence, cinematic and philosophical!
A surprisingly topical historical fantasy that explores themes of social division and individual beliefs in times of abrupt historical change. It could have turned into an adventure flick, but it is rather admirably molded as a Watteauesque-peripathetic conversation piece. Great group performance, with a spectacular Trintignant in the tiny role of the fast-adapting Average Joe.
