Why resist Robin Hood? Errol Flynn’s golden pageboy and crenellated sleeves are in the blood already, his position as the culture’s morally sanctioned freedom fighter all the more secure for lack of any identifiable real-life referent… None of the dead men bleed (and Merry Men can’t die) but there’s no shortage of saturated dazzle: the banners, those quaintly clean tights, Maid Marian’s (Olivia de Havilland) gauzy, glittering headgear—and her eyes, as she watches Robin win.

When the Siren showed this ravishing Technicolor spectacle to her family, her 9-year-old son announced at the end, “That was the best movie I’ve ever seen.” Certainly this tale… appeals to the kid in everyone. It is also a model of how to structure and pace an action movie.

There’s something extraordinarily rich about the sheer variety of colors in Robin Hood; its vision of merry old England, unmoored from any strict sense of realism, is reminiscent of the medieval tapestry–inspired look of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. At two million, Curtiz’s film was the studio’s most expensive production to date, costumed and set-designed so that the audience was never unaware of its glorious technical novelty.

It's cheesy and corny as hell, but man, those films had what lacks so much in most of productions nowadays: a real charm and a great sense of adventure. And the Technicolor is gorgeous.

Charismatic Errol Flynn and colourful compositions are solide guarantees. 100 minutes of adventures, sword fights and plain villains gives you a fun and entertaining Hollywood milestone. But i'll always prefer to this a more poetic film like Rohmer's "Perceval le gallois".
