  1. Not A Sexy Vampire's rating of the film Medløberen

A film about a guy so desperate to fit in and appear normal he joins a facist group is something that is more relevant today than ever. Combined with truly stunning how-did-they-do-that camera work and gorgeous cinematography, this was definitely worth the trek out to the fancy Astor Theatre. Some incredible performances and queer subtext, but I will need another viewing before I make a final decision.

[More like 3.5] Very interesting (and daring) looks by Storaro's cinematography, yet the plot, message, narration structure (both in script and visuals) is very weak - at least to my opinion. It sure is a movie filled with symbolisms, lacking some kind of layers.

  6. Monsieur Simon Cinema's rating of the film Medløberen

Really great film the best part about it was the color and the soundtrack. really reminded me of Mulholland Drive for some reason maybe because of the tiny splash's of surrealism thrown in.

  7. I.Camera's rating of the film Medløberen

My love for this film, perhaps the most beautiful ever made, is unlimited. As its protagonist travels through his own past, he also moves from Bertolucci's monochromatic caricature of Fascist Italy (straight lines and tilted cameras) to the soft, warm blue and red of pre-WWII Paris, hiding within the shadows of a Platonic cave from his emotional and sexual longings. Intriguing, brilliantly filmed and unforgettable.

  9. James Mihaychuk's rating of the film Medløberen

This film is about the banality of evil, showing how one man betrays his professor not for conviction, but simply to get along, and perhaps to acquire a sort of conformity to mask a sin of his younger years. At the same time it can be read as an allegory for the nature of Italy’s descent into fascism.

DCP, Cineteca di Bologna's digital restoration, rewatched,re-rating. A bit of personal history: at age 19, this film and Bertolucci were my nec plus ultra-the beginnings of cinephilia can carry indefinable shame-, and this film held a very special place. Now, in spite of some brilliant moments- brilliance is intrinsic to it -, and some good scenes, stand out, above all, a heavy and demonstrative formalism for praise.

Şu an çok pişmanım. Belki 100 kere yazdım bu da 101 olsun. Görüntü yönetimi + güzel bir alt metin her şey demek değildir. Bazen bu durum hiçbir şey demektir. Puanı yüksek diye 2 yıldız... Uzun eleştirimi altta yorum olarak bıraktım.)

  16. Carmen's rating of the film Medløberen

An intoxicating experience for sure. I'm wary of calling a film a masterpiece on my first viewing but it's definitely essential to watch. Words couldn't make justice to the pleasure I had seeing it. As a spectator I feel the confidence of a precise vision. Il conformista allows different perspectives to absorb, it's not just beautiful, well-crafted and thought-provoking, it leaves behind a vivid memory.

  18. Adam Whybray's rating of the film Medløberen

Exudes the perfumed whiff of pornography... but in the service of dismantling the psychosexual neuroses behind fascism, this is all well and good! The hang-ups around homosexuality are eye-rolling, but I think that's as much Moravia as Bertolucci. Otherwise, Bertolucci brilliantly opens up Moravia's text, finding the expressionist potentialities within what is quite a claustrophobic character study. Rotting marble.

  19. DenoResandono's rating of the film Medløberen

THE CONFORMIST is an excellent movie about conformity theme. This movie tells about a man who wants to forget his ugly past by joining facist party. So that he can be "conform" with the others. THE CONFORMIST is a character study of man's psychology. It's also a movie about existentialism and alienation. Mr. Bertolucci succeed to give a solid storytelling. Not to mention, Vittorio Storaro's beautiful cinematography

  20. Konrad Szlendak's rating of the film Medløberen

It didn't age particularly well cinematically, but the acting didn't age a bit. It's more theatre than film really with moments that have strong emotional cloak-and-dagger tone without having a lot of sense if you don't take them for granted. Shades and colours kept nicely though.

  21. dionysus67's rating of the film Medløberen

A stunningly photographed manifesto of color and light that orchestrates a metaphysic of the gaze, coupling desire (repressed and emancipated) to a Platonic critique of fascism and a reversal of Enlightenment into myth (the victory of the cave). All this, told with unsurpassed bravura with non-diegetic Godardian tropes and a triumphant dance scene of the collectivity's futile attempt to elevate Clerici to light!

  22. Subit Chakrabarti's rating of the film Medløberen

Probably one of the best movies I've ever seen. It is a technical masterpiece with some of the best light and shadow work I've ever seen. Every frame is perfect with a lot of thought put into camera angles. The story is really good too and sucks you into it head first.

  23. Slappy McGee's rating of the film Medløberen

Beautifully shot and remarkably well-crafted. Bertolucci earns his reputation by enveloping us in a tragic tale of an emotionally wounded man struggling between his troubled past, complicated present and desire of a blissful future. The artistic direction is quite stunning as is the use of light and color selections. The bad dubbing is my only knock on it, but overall, this is a heartbreaking and fascinating film.
