The Room Instrueret af Tommy Wiseau

It has a cast of professional actors who display a baseline of craft, energy, and involvement, and who surround the real-life Wiseau, who comes off in the film as a raging energumen of inchoate need. . . . “The Room,” with its blend of surface slickness and artistic clumsiness, is, for better or worse (actually, for worse), a vision of the world. It’s the embodiment of a world view that only an obliviously incoherent person would willingly display, even flaunt.

Engineering this sort of spectacle would be embarrassing for an artist of any age, though it is doubly so because Wiseau is (conservative estimate) pushing 50 here, and it’s not without reason that “Die middle-aged, leave a Bowflex-toned-but-sort-of-weird-looking corpse” isn’t a saying in common usage—if you’re to lose your youthful glow in outliving Chatterton, the silver lining is that you’re supposed to get wiser.

Accidental surrealism can be even more potent than the conscious kind, and THE ROOM is some kind of zenith of its type, the equal to anything Ed Wood committed to celluloid.

  • Ethan's rating of the film The Room

It might be a shitty movie but it does have its moments and there are some brilliance in it whether it was intended or not. I also feel like there is a three hour director's cut here because there are a lot of subplots that are never addressed. I feel like you could make this film good but then nobody would probably fuck with it because everyone loves a trainwreck and they cling to the novelty of it all.

  • msmichel's rating of the film The Room

There's a certain earnestness in the filmmaking that makes this awful film so watchable that its become the closest thing to a cult classic released over the last 20 years or so. Wieseau's performance gives new meaning to delusional and his scriptwriting is equally awful. But somehow like many others before me I can imagine watching this again just to relish in its earnest ineptness.

  • smndvdcl's rating of the film The Room

Hard to review this film: do you give it 1 star or 5? What is the litmus for hierarchies of taste? High brow, mid brow, low brow? Cult cinema? Postmodern reappropriation? The 'so bad it's good' phenomena (aka. Plan 9 From Outer Space, Sharknado...The Happening) makes the critical lens of spectatorship seem arbitrary. Suddenly, it's not what you watch, it becomes about how you watch a film and in what context.

  • Matthew Martens's rating of the film The Room

On one side of the door, fresh air; on the other, cake. Upstairs, sex lumbers and groans. On the stairs? Much the same, lover ... boy. We know as well as Wiseau: this world was never meant for one as beautiful as Johnny, whose tragically implicit dependence on steroids, benzos and novocaine (not to mention his beloved security football) blinds him to the folly of playing catch with "friends" standing three feet away.

  • Palmat's rating of the film The Room

Truly a one-of-a-kind movie. I have NEVER seen anything like it on any sort of level. It was absolutely terrible in too many ways to mention. Still it is one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time and I had a great time watching this train wreck. Highly recommended for all the wrong reasons!

  • Matt Burgess's rating of the film The Room

Obvs fun, weird and dumb-as-fuck but kinda obvious when compared to other cult classics. White frat boys eat this shit up cause it makes them feel intelligent and savvy, "omg bro this is SO bad HAHAHA holy shit man this makes no sense". Duh dude, relax your flaps. But its just a particularly odd vanity project gone viral. Its cute and all but there's better and weirder 'bad cinema' out there to be discovered.

  • EastyBoy's rating of the film The Room

Absolutely awful/brilliant! It's terrible in such an inventive way that it deserves some kind of masterpiece status. Although I think it could have done with some more long, boring sex montages as there were only THREE in the first THIRTY MINUTES! Unbelievable!

  • Tyler Aikens's rating of the film The Room

Daedelus: She absolutely does. I loved this movie. Of course, for it's awfulness. However, I couldn't help but give it a full 5 stars as I have watched it 4 times in the past 5 days. So many hilarious quotes! "That's the idea!"
