Our take

Carlos Serrano was Carlos Reygadas’ producer on Japón, and in turn Reygadas produced this Madrid-set debut feature. With a thrilling visual style reminiscent of the Dardenne brothers, The Tree follows a drifting soul as he confronts his obligations—and builds up to an extraordinary climax.
