This Time Tomorrow Instrueret af Lina Rodriguez

What’s interesting about Tomorrow is how flawlessly it simulates the illusion of documentary: this is Zaldua’s first credit, but Shelton and Osma are both actors with a few high-profile credits, none of which you know or perceive off the bat. I was startled to find out, come film’s end, that I hadn’t been watching yet another hybrid; the illusion of watching a family that’s agreed to offer themselves for extended observation even at the most painful moments is flawlessly sustained throughout.

A discrete, almost artisanal, Colombian film about an adolescent girl at odds with her parents, This Time Tomorrow is less remarkable for its storyline than for the way in which writer-director Lina Rodriguez wields shot length like a freshly inked fountain pen. Here, cinematic rhythm is punctuated, ever so consistently, by the indiscriminate usage of long takes, and regardless of whether the actions are completely inconsequential or pivotal to the drama.

There is a kind of poetry to the way the two parents and their teenage daughter fold laundry together, just as there is palpable tension in their glances and gestures. Even the most mundane activities, such as house cleaning, seem loaded with meaning. A film about marriage and parenting, Mañana a esta hora is also a meditation on acceptance. In her documentary-like approach, like Mekas, Rodriguez elevates the unremarkable, so that, in the end, her film becomes a delicate memento mori.

  • saitosouta's rating of the film This Time Tomorrow

Five star + more & more & more. Simple, minimal family's everyday portrait but fulfilled with many irreplaceable moments I don't want to forget for life. Each sequence, because of its fragmentality without excessive information, connects organically & shine with each color, which always makes me cry. For me, this is perfect film about life.

  • Katya Kazbek's rating of the film This Time Tomorrow

A raw portrait of family life with all the fluff, the mundanity, the belly laughter and the pain of belonging in a small unit. A family of three goes through the bad and the good times together but once tragedy strikes, its members are left torn apart by expressing their suffering in different ways. A stark, blunt, honest, yet uncomplicated film that made it easier for me to deal with my own family stuff.

  • Kamran's rating of the film This Time Tomorrow

A well composed film with strong aesthetic values, a relatively minimalist mise-en-scene, and a mature, nuanced narrative. Appears South American, in spite of Canadian ties, and falls in line with South American cinematography more so than Canadian. The still frame, long-take aesthetic is certainly one more celebrated by international cinema than Canada proper. 75/100 – Very Good. (3.5)

  • Korial's rating of the film This Time Tomorrow

Lina Rodriguez is mastering the rare ability of representing human events and stories in a natural (in the sense of real, not realistic), silent, touching manner; existences expanding, stretching, and moving like clouds in the sky. While it is not yet a fully developed and autonomous poetic language, it looks promising. She has surprised me two times and thus I will keep an eye on her works.

  • Carlos Pineda's rating of the film This Time Tomorrow

  • Kevin Matthews's rating of the film This Time Tomorrow

Although this tries to provide a decent snapshot of a difficult time in the life of a teenager, writer-director Lina Rodriguez makes it an uphill struggle for herself, and viewers, with a main character who is too unsympathetic (although her behaviour rings true) and pacing and structure issues that are unresolved by the time it all ends.

  • Not A Sexy Vampire's rating of the film This Time Tomorrow

A film of two halves, one a perfect beautiful look at the daily lives of two women, the other a quiet pared down examination of loss. The first is absolutely more effective simply because it's surprisingly still rare to see such simple, everyday stuff in cinema. Especially one with such a gorgeous, nuanced depiction of a mother/daughter relationship, comparable to Lady Bird. If only the second half was better.

  • Thomas's rating of the film This Time Tomorrow

There is much to like about Rodriguez's directing style, long shots and pacing which allows time to unravel, subtle nuanced character relationships. Overall though it is and flat and undynamic. It stays in one gear throughout, making it undramatic and so we don't care about any of the characters.
