It's not easy to create such a complex, sexy, non-judgemental, approach on what a polyamorous triangle can be like. Quite an achievement. Usually we have either moralistic takes on how certain lifestyles just don't work, or the counterpart position, the defense of a lifestyle, without the honest complexity that life always has. But in the end this is just a good, sexy, love story. And some people do live like this.
A touristic view of ART [declaimed as if on the proverbial plinth] and sexual intrigue dressed as romanticism stymies this minor Allen where artistic endeavour is as easy as shelling peas. Thin characterisations do not convey the emotional and intellectual weight the (unnecessary) narration alludes to. Passable wallpaper but reductive in most senses.
Seen for the first time yesterday although the DVD has been resting for 7 years in my library. A few impressions: I liked the brisk pace of the film as well as its warm colours, the casting is perfect and it was the first time that I noticed crossfade plans in a Woody Allen movie. Highly recommended.
